RUGBY Clubs on the hunt for head coaches

- BY JACK NIXON

Aberdeen Wanderers are looking for a new head coach after Waldemar Van Heeren announced he was leaving the area.

The South African enjoyed a good season with the Groats Road club who were sitting fourth in Caley Division 1 before the season was halted. He encouraged an attacking style of rugby which yielded 387 points from 12 games in a campaign curtailed by the spread of coronavirus.

The club’s director of rugby Russell Arthur said: “Waldemar did a great job, fitting nicely into the culture of the club, helping us create good attitudes on and off the field. It’s deeply unfortunate that he is leaving us just as he was getting into his stride.”

Wanderers are particularly proud of their youth set-up which

produced Jason White who played 77 times for Scotland and also captained his country.

Arthur added: “Whoever we appoint will have the maximum support of our coaching and management team. The worst scenario is that we don’t find an appropriate applicant, we have senior players who can step up and take charge, including captain Mitchell Scott and Ewan Geddes who has done a great job with the under 18s.”

Wanderers are not the only Caley club looking for a new head coach as Aberdeenshire and Garioch have just lost the services of Barny Henderson and Charlie Catto.

Arthur said: “We know it won’t be easy to fill any of these posts but I like to think we will be offering some young coach the opportunity to cut their teeth at clubs who are looking to the future.”
