Christie has not written season off yet

-

After a five-year absence from serious competition, Banchory Stonehaven AC’s Kathryn Christie is having no trouble remaining motivated during the coronavirus lockdown.

The 25-year-old Scotland international sprinter is based at home in Finzean on Deeside where she is training in the hope there may be some competitions before the year is out.

There is no proper running track or well equipped gym, but Christie has knuckled down to the challenge.

She said: “I’d been training with Eddie McKenna’s group in Aberdeen before lockdown but he still sends me through my sessions and I’ve kept it going.

“Everything has been going well. I’m using local paths in the area and I take my dog on a few runs, which is fun.

“I also do a bit of cycling.

“It’s a bit like going back to my roots as this is what I had to do as a youngster when Willy Russell coached me and that worked well enough. So, it’s not a problem at all.

“It has been an opportunity to work on strengthening my weak areas.

“With the injuries I’ve had, I’ve been trying to strengthen the muscles around my feet. I’m doing whatever I can to build my strength and get everything in as best shape as possible.”

Christie, who has only tackled a handful of races over the past five years as she battled back from serious foot injuries, hasn’t given up hope of getting back on to the track at some stage this summer.

She said: “I’m not writing this year off just yet as no one knows what will happen. That’s a motivator for me to keep training.”
