Call for more consultation on George Street measures

An Aberdeen MSP has entered the debate around controversial changes to the city’s roads in the name of physical distancing.

Kevin Stewart, Holyrood’s local government minister, has urged council staff to ensure as many residents and business owners as possible are involved in the planning of the work.

The local authority began altering George Street this week as part of the £1.76 million scheme to offer more space for people to walk, cycle and queue.

But while the traders’ association was consulted, other business owners have claimed they have not been contacted at all.

The Aberdeen Central MSP, whose office is in nearby John Street, said: “While I’m mindful that the council has had to act at pace to deliver changes in the interest of public safety, what I and others in the area want is for complete clarity on this matter and proper consultation as we progress.

“Communication is absolutely key here and the more the council engages with local folk and local traders, the more successful this can be – changes will have to made along the way and I hope with a more open and frank discussion a clear way forward can be forged.”

George Street councillor and administration transport spokeswoman Sandra Macdonald promised the changes would continually be reviewed, saying: “Things will undoubtedly develop as the measures go in and we see how traffic responds – and if there are pinch points we will have to resolve them as they arise.”
