Council member in Balkans conflict podcast

- BY KIRSTEN ROBERTSON

An Aberdeenshire councillor will reflect on her trip to Srebrenica as part of a memorial week podcast.

The podcast is included in a series of events being organised by the Remembering Srebrenica Scotland charity to commemorate the killing of more than 8,000 men and boys during the Balkans conflict in 1995 and the abuse which many women and girls were forced to endure.

Alison Evison’s visit was organised by Remembering Srebrenica Scotland in November 2018.

The North Kincardine councillor, who is also president of Cosla, said: “Just 25 years ago, within Europe, lives were destroyed and communities and families torn apart by tremendous cruelty which we can only just start to imagine by listening to the stories of the survivors.

“Remembering Srebrenica Scotland works so hard, not only to ensure that the atrocity is remembered and commemorated every year, but that we continue to learn from what happened and ensure that such horror can never be repeated.”

With face-to-face commemorations for this year’s memorial week cancelled due to the Covid-19 crisis, Remembering Srebrenica Scotland is preparing a range of broadcast and social media events and content as part of the 25th anniversary remembrance.

Mrs Evison will appear in a podcast series titled Srebrenica Stories, featuring past delegates and those who lived or worked in Bosnia during the war.

The podcast will be available to listen to this week via Remembering Srebrenica Scotland, Anchor Podcasts, Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
