- BY KIRSTEN ROBERTSON

A Shetland church which closed two years ago could be given a new lease of life as a creche, museum or even a public library.

Built in 1897, Quarff Church has been put up for sale by the Church of Scotland.

In 2018, a number of churches across Shetland were earmarked for closure.

A total of 20 churches were announced to close, including those on Foula, Fetlar, Fair Isle, the Out Skerries and Yell.

The move sparked concerns that funeral services for people would not be held at the same location as they will be buried – but had come

into force in response to dwindling congregation numbers.

Quarff Church, on the A970 five miles south of Lerwick, “presents an excellent opportunity to purchase in a scenic and rarely available location” however the roof is in a poor state of repair – potentially posing a safety risk as loose slates are held on by netting.

The Church of Scotland website states: “The property is not listed, and could be used, without the necessity of obtaining change of use consent, as a creche, day nursery, day centre, educational establishment, museum or public library.

“It also has potential for a variety of other uses, such as retail, commercial or community uses, subject to obtaining the appropriate consents. Conversion to residential accommodation might also be possible.”

Offers over £10,000 are sought. To find out more search properties for sale on the Church of Scotland website.
