Manwho spat at officers is jailed

-

An Inverness man who spat in the faces of two police constables and then told them he had Aids has been jailed for 14 months.

Ian Whiteford was told his actions were “disgusting and deplorable” when he appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court yesterday.

The court heard the 47-year-old, of St Valery Avenue, had become hostile and aggressive towards the two officers after they went to assist him when they spotted he was bleeding and unsteady on his feet.

Whiteford then spat twice in the face of one constable before spitting at his colleague.

A third officer arrived to assist his colleagues and as a spit hood was being applied, Whiteford spat into the face of the constable applying it.

Fiscal depute David Morton said: “Each officer required blood tests, an injection and a course of preventative medication. They are scheduled to have further blood tests in six months’ time.”

Whiteford admitted two charges of assault, and his solicitor said he was “horrified” at his “deplorable behaviour” on April 13 this year.
