Impact: Move is described as a ‘hammer blow’

-

Business experts last night described the Granite City’s lockdown as a “hammer blow” for independent firms.

The first minister announced yesterday the Scottish Government is implementing a limited local lockdown in Aberdeen, shutting pubs and restaurants down again just weeks after they reopened.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) Scotland policy chairman Andrew McRae said although the measures were necessary “to prevent additional nationwide restrictions”, it was a “hammer blow for independent firms in Aberdeen and the northeast”.

He added: “While hospitality businesses will be devastated to close their doors, these changes will have a knock-on impact on the entire local economy.

“We’ll need to see government at all levels step up to help smaller businesses and the self-employed affected by this lockdown, including financial support if it becomes necessary. Critically, FSB also wants to see crystal clear communications from policymakers to firms in the city.”

CBI Scotland director Tracy Black said the move would be a disappointment to many but “public safety must come first”.

She emphasised the need for “government support to evolve in line with the trajectory of the virus”.

Ms Black said: “Aberdeen won’t be the last local area that faces renewed restrictions, so the Scottish Government must do everything it can to provide clear, timely advice and appropriate support to firms and individuals. That’s a must to maintain public confidence.”
