Edmondson puts Hoops on notice

Ryan Edmondson reckons Aberdeen are capable of pushing Celtic at the top of the table this season. The on- loan striker, who scored his first Dons goals in the 4- 2 win over Hamilton Accies on Tuesday night, believes the strength in the Aberdeen squad means they are capable of posing a serious challenge to the title-holders.

The two sides meet at Pittodrie on Sunday, with a victory for the Dons enough to take them above Celtic into second, behind leaders Rangers.

Aberdeen’ s last victory against Celtic in the league came in May 2018, when they won 1- 0 at Parkhead to seal second place.

Edmondson said: “Aberdeen is a massive club in the league. The squad we’ve got this year is so strong and we’ve got so much depth.

“Why can’t we (push them all the way)? That’s a question the gaffer’s posed to us quite a lot. All the talk is about the Old Firm, Celtic and Rangers. Why not us? We’ve got the squad to do it, we’ve got the quality to do it.

“I think 100% we can get a couple of wins against Celtic and we have confidence we can go away to Rangers and get a result. But we take it game by game and all the focus is on the game we’ve got coming up. As long as we keep winning, it’s all we can do.

“To be up there, in and around the big teams, we see ourselves as one of the top three teams. The draw on Sunday has put us down a bit because we could have been closer to Celtic, but we move on from that and take it game by game.

“We proved against Hamilton how we were able to focus and get the job done. We’ve edged that little step closer. Sunday’s game will be massive for us, especially being that close to Celtic. If we can get a result above them, then it would be unbelievable for us as a club.”

The Dons have lost just twice this season, to Rangers and Motherwell, and they blew Hamilton away with a 30- minute spell at Pittodrie that produced four goals.

Edmondson got a brace – his first senior goals – and hailed the buzz around the club as they head into the showdown with Neil Lennon’s side.

He added: “Confidence is running high in the club. I think we’re playing unbelievable football at the minute.

“We keep an eye on other teams and their form and how they’re doing, but we try not to focus on that too much.

“We focus on ourselves and take it game by game. We’ ll pick out their weaknesses and hopefully we can put on a show and grind out a result.

“We’ll go into Sunday full of confidence, especially off the back of a 4-2 win. We’ve got a lot of goals in us. We’ve got that quality coming in from the wide areas.

“We’ve got so much depth in the squad and the quality there. I’m sure we can go there full of confidence and play our game and grab a result.”
