Roads across the northeast were left swamped due to the torrential rain yesterday morning.

Journeys across the region were thrown into upheaval amid various local closures, public transport delays and cancellations – with all motorists being urged to drive with care and leave extra time for their trips.

Police advised drivers to avoid the Toll of Birness on the A90 Ellon to Fraserburgh road due to flooding.

The A975 Newburgh to Cruden Bay route was badly affected, with deep water across both carriageways.

Stagecoach advised customers the 53 Aberdeen- Ellon service had been delayed because of the inclement weather and services were cancelled.

Rail services between Aberdeen and Inverness and Inverurie were delayed. The track was inspected and affected stretches reopened under 5mph speed restrictions.

The Oldmeldrum to Inverurie and Kingseat to Newmachar roads were impassable due to water on the road.

In Inverurie itself, the High Street was closed beside North Street and Blackhall Road.

Police also reported standing water on the A96 Aberdeen to Inverness road, between Elgin and Brodie. Footage online showed flooding on the showground near Ferguson Hall in Turriff after the banks of a burn broke.

Coastal communities in the south of Aberdeenshire also battled rising water as a section of the main road between Aberdeen and Dundee was lef t swamped. Tankers were brought in to drain the A92 stretch between Montrose and Arbroath following the overnight downpour.

Several cars ended up submerged in water which had gathered in a dip in the road.

There were also issues on the coast road between St Cyrus and Johnshaven.
