Golabek commits for Glen’s title bid

- BILL MCALLISTER

Connor Golabek, who has scored in two successive comeback games, has told Glen Urquhart he is willing to play regularly next year in their bid to regain the Premiership place they lost in 2018.

Last season’s leading marksman told the club in January the was sitting out the 2020 campaign, a major disappointment to the Drumnadrochit side.

But a change of heart has seen the 24- year- old IT worker, with a prodigious workrate on the pitch, commit to Glen’ s bid for promotion from the National Division.

Co-manager Stuart Mackintosh said: “Connor has enjoyed being back in training recently and playing friendlies, and he has now assured us that he will be available for next season.

“This is hugely encouraging as he is such an important player for us with his ability to find the net, particularly when we have such a young line-up.”

Golabek, who helped Glen reach last year ’ s MacTavish Cup final before losing to Newtonmore, will face Premiership opposition tomorrow when

Fort William are visitors to Blairbeg Park, with the fixture being reversed next weekend.

Lachie Shaw is working and unavailable for Fort, who have scored freely in post-lockdown action.

Co-manager Victor Smith praised the form of 18- year- old wing back Ryan Boyle in these matches.

He said: “Ryan missed some training last season due to college work, but he’s looking extremely fit now.

“He’s got a mature head on young shoulders and is emerging as a really good prospect. I’ve no doubt he’ ll make a Premier Division player in the future.”

Inverness have started their winter training schedule but are still hopeful of playing further first team fixtures.

Manager Calum Macleod said: “We’re still interested in playing Strathglass, Beauly, Fort William and Glen Urquhart if games can be fitted in.

“We’ re getting good numbers turning up in training, particularly with our under- 17s, who are using the all-weather surface at Inverness Royal Academy.”

Scottish Government finance secretary Kate Forbes, who represents Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, has attended a Camanachd Association board meeting to hear about the issues affecting the game during the Covid-19 crisis.

Association president Keith Loades said: “We greatly appreciate Kate spending time listening to the challenges our clubs are facing in these troubling times.”
