Scarily good Halloween costumes for your tiny terrors

No one can cast a spell to make this Halloween the same as in other years, but little ones shouldn’t miss out on the chance to dress up, says Jacqueline Wake Young

So, who is going to tell the kids that Halloween is cancelled this year? No one? Thought so. We’d better have a look at Halloween costumes then. Anyone with primary-age children may be wondering what impact the Covid restrictions will have on Halloween, and one Stonehaven parent told the P&J: “Nicola Sturgeon should send out a memo!”

In fact, in mid-September, the first minister said: “I don’t want to be the person telling children they can’t go guising, but if it is necessary because of where we are it’s better than allowing children to be at risk.”

Asked then if new restrictions would affect Halloween celebrations she said: “I don’t know. I wish I had a crystal ball sitting next to my magic wand and we would be in a different position.”

Current Scottish Government guidance states: “You can meet people outside, in your garden or a public space, in groups of up to six people from no more than two households, not counting the under-12s.”

Some parents are considering garden parties rather than guising, but the restrictions state that if you are meeting another household in their garden, you should only go into their home to access the garden or to use the toilet, taking care to wash hands and avoid touching surfaces.

While no one has a magic spell to make Halloween fun for little ones this year, they still have the chance to dress up and do a Covid-compliant activity.

And if they don’t get any sweets, it just means Halloween 2020 is more about the tricks and less about the treats.
