MY LIFE BRUCE MacGREGOR

-

Renowned Blazin’ Fiddles member and BBC Radio Scotland broadcaster Bruce MacGregor recently joined Nicola Benedetti, Sharon Shannon, Jerry Douglas and the Scottish Folk Orchestra to record Doddie’s Dream, a charity video and single in aid of the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

It’s available on all the usual platforms but donations can also be made directly via myname5doddie.co.uk

First record bought?

With The Beatles, by The Beatles.

Book that changed your life? The E-myth, a brilliant look at small businesses and why most fail.

Most expensive purchase? My wife’s Shetland ponies.

First job?

Working for my dad on a peat bog. Sinking tractors and generally not being much use.

Favourite time of day? Evening meal with the family.

Last time you cried?

Seeing the first video cut of Doddie’s Dream.

Worst fashion faux pas?

The 1990s outfits. Shellsuits, mullet, white shoes. You name it, I did it.

Favourite holiday destination? Rural France.

Idea of holiday hell?

Bus tours. I spend most of my days with Blazin’ Fiddles in the back of a bus; the last thing I want to do is be in one on holiday

Biggest phobia?

Not keen on snakes or massive hairy spiders but being buried alive is the number one!

What are you watching on TV?

Better Call Saul.

Favourite movie?

Oh Brother Where Art Thou or Rocky IV, depending on the mood.

How do you relax?

Cycling for miles and miles around the Highlands, then a tune with friends at MacGregor’s.

Who you last spoke to on the phone?

My best friend Graeme MacDonald – been friends since day one of primary school.

First thing you did this morning?

Kissed my wife.

Best advice you’ve been given?

“No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking.” A Voltaire quote my dad had scribbled on the kitchen wall.

Worst mistake?

As a teenager not fully appreciating the amazing music teacher I had in Donald Riddell.

Your inspiration?

Doddie Weir has certainly been an inspiration to everyone. He’s an example in how to tackle adversity head on with a smile.

Would most like to meet? Angus Young from AC/DC.

Childhood crush?

Daisy Duke, from the Dukes of Hazzard TV programme.

Weirdest fan gift?

Two Scotty dogs with frilly socks on. Given anonymously.

Worst meal?

Andoilette sausage in Brittany. Couldn’t believe the stench.

What makes you laugh?

I love the chat we have with Blazin’ Fiddles. Very self-deprecating

Most embarrassing moment?

Trousers splitting completely in front of a sold-out crowd at the King’s Theatre in Glasgow at Celtic Connections after doing the splits.

Sean Connery or Daniel Craig?

Not into James Bond at all I’m afraid.
