MacDonald to hang up boots but Rodger’s set for a Kilmallie return

-

Former Scotland attacker Liam MacDonald has told Kilmallie that he is hanging up his boots – but fellow hitman Michael Rodger will make his comeback in the new season.

The highly-talented 31-year-old MacDonald has been a linchpin for the Caol outfit but knee trouble saw him miss most of the 2019 Premiership campaign.

“Liam has been a wonderful stalwart for the club for a dozen years or so but he’s told me that he won’t be playing again”, said playermanager Martin Stewart. “We’re extremely grateful for his contribution.”

MacDonald scored a hat-trick as Kilmallie beat Caberfeidh 6-0 in the 2016 Balliemore Cup final and two years later he scored the goal which clinched the National Division title to earn the Canal Park team a Premiership place.

Meanwhile, Rodger has joined the Blues in preseason training, having previously quit the game to focus on playing football.

Stewart added: “Michael is back with us and that’s a real lift. His goals have been important in the past and we’re delighted he can again be a threat.

“Full-back Alan Macdonald, who missed our last full season in 2019, is also committing to play this year which is another tonic.

“Last March, on the eve of the Covid-hit season, we were struggling for players but now we’ve 30 lads registered and things are looking much more positive.”

Jack Pilcher, a key man when Caberfeidh won promotion to the

Premiership four years ago, is to make a comeback for the Strathpeffer side.

The wing-centre, who has not played for over two years because of a medical condition, has rejoined Cabers in preseason training.

Manager Jodi Gorski said: “Jack’s medical complaint has now been stabilised by medication and he’s been cleared to play again.

“It’ll be good to have him back in our midfield and Jack’s looking forward to competing for a place.”

Kevin Bartlett, a prolific marksman at international shintyhurling level, has opted to continue with the Castle Leod team.

“Kevin tells me he’s giving it one last year,” added Gorski. “I believe he has the skills and reactions to carry on making a good contribution for as long as he wants. We’re delighted that he’ll still be helping the younger lads in the new campaign.”

Cabers have arranged to play Newtonmore on May 29, at whichever venue is in best condition at the time.
