MURRAY OUT BUT SALISBURY SAILS THROUGH

-

Jamie Murray suffered another disappointing defeat with partner Bruno Soares in the second round of the men’s doubles at Wimbledon but Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram eased through to round three.

Murray reunited with Brazilian Soares at the end of last season after deciding to part from countryman Neal Skupski but they have struggled to win matches and lost 6-7 (3) 6-3 6-2 to Kazakh Andrey Golubev and Dutchman Robin Haase.

“It was disappointing,” said Murray. “I didn’t play a good match. I’ve not been playing well the last few months – longer than that really.”

The Scot has been struggling with a neck problem but insisted that was not a factor, saying: “It’s still not quite right but it’s not affecting me playing, which is good.”

In contrast, Salisbury and American Ram are having another strong season, narrowly failing to defend their Australian Open title and reaching two other finals. The sixth seeds have yet to drop a set and defeated Marton Fucsovics of Hungary and Italy’s Stefano Travaglia 6-3 6-4.

The most impressive result of the day came in the final match as Cameron Norrie, hours after losing in four sets to Roger Federer in the singles, teamed up with Spain’s Jaume Munar to beat fifth seeds and Australian Open champions Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek 7-6 (10) 1-6 7-5.

Heather Watson and Harriet Dart are flying the British flag in the women’s doubles, the home pair beating Petra Martic of Croatia and American Shelby Rogers 3-6 7-6 (6) 6-1.

• Wimbledon will feature capacity crowds on its two biggest courts for the quarter-finals, semifinals and finals.

The tournament is part of the Government’s Events Research Programme and operated at 50% capacity for the first week.

Centre Court, with a capacity of just short of 15,000, and Court One, which holds 12,345, will see full crowds from Tuesday through to next Sunday.
