Raducanu into round two in New York – but Norrie loses to Alcaraz

-

Teenager Emma Raducanu claimed a very deserved two-set victory over Stefanie Vogele of Switzerland – despite taking almost 10 minutes to seal match point.

The young Brit was relentless in her US Open first round clash but it took seven attempts before she could finally see off her opponent 6-2 6-3.

Raducanu told Amazon Prime: “I think everyone could tell I was getting a bit shaky in the last game but I got there in the end and I was so relieved.

“The fans made me feel so welcome and so at home, so I’m really appreciative.

“I’ve been playing on the hard courts in the States, so I’m used to the heat and humidity.

“I feel really good physically, so I’m just excited to see how far I can go.”

• British number two Cameron Norrie found Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz too hot to handle as he tumbled out of the US Open.

Norrie has enjoyed such a successful 2021 that he was seeded 26 at Flushing Meadows.

The 26-year-old had also reached the third round in his previous four grand slam events.

But he was beaten in straight sets by US Open debutant Alcaraz, at 18 the youngest man in the world’s top 100.

Norrie had no answer to the youngster’s power as he lost 6-4 6-4 6-3.

• Defending champion Naomi Osaka got her US

Open campaign up and running smoothly with a straight-sets win over Marie Bouzkova.

The third seed allayed any fears about a lack of matches during what has been a turbulent year after her withdrawal from the French Open and decision to skip Wimbledon.

She was made to work hard for the opening set, saving three break points at 1-1 before eventually forcing the break to clinch it in game 10.

But Osaka, a two-time champion in New York, promptly raced away in the second set to register a 6-4 6-1 victory.

“It feels kind of crazy to play in front of everyone again,” she said on court afterwards.

“Last year when we didn’t have a crowd it felt quite lonely for me. The energy here is unmatched.”

• Andy Murray said he had lost respect for Stefanos Tsitsipas after bowing out of the US Open to the world number three in a dramatic and at times bad-tempered five-setter.

The 34-year-old Scot was livid at the lengthy bathroom breaks Tsitsipas was taking between sets and demanded more should be done to clamp down on the “nonsense”.

“It’s not so much leaving the court. It’s the amount of time,” said Murray.

“It’s just disappointing because I feel it influenced the outcome of the match.”
