Businessman and Cove Rangers vice-chairman

Gordon Hutcheon ran Hutcheon Services, raised money for Friends of Anchor, cheered on Cove and his beloved Dons, and had a zest for life.

A cancer diagnosis seven years ago put a spring in his step, giving him passion to make every day count.

It was with huge sadness that his family said recently he had died with Covid.

Mr Hutcheon, born on November 9 1947, was 74.

He was raised in Torry, Aberdeen, with sister Ethel. Dad Gordon worked for Hunter Construction and mum was Ada.

Mr Hutcheon went to Walker Road Primary, then Torry Intermediate.

He began work as an apprentice electrician with Harry Sim before an office job with JTL Parkinson.

In 1969 he met Lorraine Smith through friend former SFA president and Torry loon, Alan McRae. The couple married in Craigiebuckler Church on December 18 1971.

Gordon started his first business, Hutcheon Electrical, with an office on Chattan Place, in 1975.

They lived in Airyhall where they raised Kerry, Scott and Paul.

“My dad was a really good businessman. Not just was he good at what he did but he loved networking and the many friends and connections he made,” said Kerry. “Some years into things he bought over a plumbing business which became Hutcheon Plumbing and Electrical.

“It was very successful, he did a lot of work all over Scotland,” Kerry said.

Mr McRae encouraged Mr Hutcheon to get involved with Cove Rangers where as a vice-chairman he helped in their transformation from amateurs to League One table-toppers in the SPFL.

After the death of his sister in 2001 he began cycling for cancer charities. Playing golf one day he hurt his back. “After a series of tests my dad was told it was a type of cancer called myeloma,” said Kerry. “That was seven years ago. He had a year of treatment which included chemo then a stem cell transplant.”

A small change in a blood test this July led to him starting chemo in October.

“Somewhere between blood tests and him being out and about he caught the virus,” said Kerry. He died on November 27. Gordon is survived by his mum, wife, his children and seven grandchildren.
