A couple of days ago thinking of my dad scattered on a hillside in the Trossachs.

Worst fashion faux pas?

I turned up to a wedding once in a very short mini dress and bruises on my knees.

Favourite holiday destinatio­n?

A wooden hut on the coast in Argyll. No electricit­y, paraffin lamps, bliss.

Biggest phobia?

Heights.

What are you watching on TV?

Just finished Paris Police 1900. Brutal but brilliant.

Favourite movie?

I’m a sucker for Babe because of the singing mice. How do you relax? TV. Wine. Snacks.

Best advice you’ve been given?

More of a motto really, from Goethe: “Do not hurry, do not rest.”

Who you last spoke to on the phone?

My brother, to ask what he wanted for his birthday.

First thing you did this morning?

Looked at the single yellow marigold I rescued from my allotment.

Worst mistake?

Worrying what other people think.

Your inspiratio­n?

There are so many, but Kate Atkinson inspired me to write what I wanted without worrying how it might fit into any particular genre.

Would most like to meet?

Right now, Charles Dickens.

Childhood crush?

Crunchies.

Weirdest fan gift (or present you’ve received)?

A black fox stole. Very stroke-able.

Quirky habits?

I do like to wander in graveyards. I call it research.

Worst meal?

Lemon rice soup. It’s a childhood trauma.

What makes you laugh?

My partner being silly.
