Campbell rallies Aberdeen for big day at Tannadice after loss to Well

Loren Campbell says Aberdeen’s 4-1 defeat by Motherwell in SWPL 1 was a “bad day at the office” – but the captain has backed her side to bounce back.

The Dons lost 4-1 to Motherwell at K-Park, having gone 3-0 down by half time after goals from Gill Inglis, Kayla McDonald-Nguah and Katie Rice.

Bailley Collins pulled a goal back for the Reds just after an hour, but it was merely consolation as McDonald-Nguah added her second of the day a minute later.

The result leaves Aberdeen second-bottom of SWPL 1, four points clear of bottom side Glasgow but five behind Hamilton Accies, who sit in 10th place.

The Aberdeen skipper said: “If you go 3-0 down in this league, it’s very hard to come back from that – we’re disappointed with that.

“It’s even more disappointing because I think we played quite well in the second half – but it was just too little, too late, by that point. It was quite a young team, so maybe it’s something that we can learn from off the back of this – to be more aggressive and have more confidence.

“I think we came out well in the second half and after we score – we think we could get back into it – but then Motherwell get another.

“It was just a bad day at the office.

“There are always positives to take from the game and I think we can take parts from our secondhalf performance into the next game against Dundee United.”

Aberdeen travel to Dundee United on Sunday when the Tangerines will play at Tannadice for the first time in the top flight.

United have played at the stadium twice before, with the last game being when they lifted the SWPL 2 trophy last season.

The Dons captain says her side won’t be fazed by the occasion, but will actually be motivated by the stadium conditions.

Campbell said: “We’ve had a couple big occasions at Pittodrie recently, so we know exactly what to experience from that kind of stadium experience.

“Their normal pitch – Gussie Park – is quite a tight pitch, so to be honest, I’m quite glad we’re playing them at Tannadice.

“We know the crowd will be behind them and it’ll be a tough game, but it’ll be a nice grass pitch to play football on so we’ll look forward to it.”

Campbell says winning will be the aim at Tannadice – like it will be when they host Spartans at Balmoral Stadium the following week.

She added: “I think Dundee United and Spartans are both games where three points has to be our main focus.

“We are where we are – and it’s tough being secondbottom – but we’ve not even played every team once yet, so the panic hasn’t started to set in.

“We know it’s been tough start.

“But that doesn’t mean we can’t go on and beat all these teams in the next round of fixtures.”
