■ 1755: Thomas Lord, the man who developed the world-famous Lord’s ground at St John’s Wood, London, in 1814, was born.
■ 1990: The Football Association fined Aston Villa’s Republic of Ireland star Paul McGrath £8,500 for comments he made about Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson in a newspaper article.
■ 2005: Middlesbrough’s Portuguese defender Abel Xavier was suspended for 18 months by Fifa after testing positive for methandienone, a performance-enhancing drug. The ban was later reduced to 12 months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
■ 2012: Mark Hughes was sacked as manager of QPR following a run of 12 games without a victory at the start of the Premier League season.
■ 2014: Lewis Hamilton claimed his second Formula One world championship with victory at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
■ 2019: Jose Mourinho began his reign as Tottenham manager with a 3-2 win over West Ham.
