Blue Toon boosted by the return of McLean after lengthy absence

-

Peterhead striker Russell McLean is back in training this week after a lengthy absence due to a knee injury.

McLean has missed the entirety of the season after complications following an operation but is stepping up his recovery.

The Blue Toon have suffered from a lack of goals this season and, in some games, have played without a recognised striker.

The short-lived experiment with Cristiano Kisuka did not work out, with the former Rangers and Aberdeen youngster unable to commit to the club due to work commitments.

Peterhead have also been without Ola Adeyemo since August due to an Achilles problem. Midfielder Ryan Dow has been used in a forward role in recent matches.

“Russell did non-contact training last night,” said assistant manager Davie Nicholls. “It’s pleasing he’s back training and he can give us a lift. It’s definitely been frustrating for him and he’ll be looking to get himself back soon.

“He gets goals and that’s massive, particularly for us just now as we’re struggling in that area.”

Nicholls continues to take the team as Peterhead progress with their search for a new manager.

He took training yesterday and will likely do so again today unless a replacement for Jim McInally is appointed quickly.

Peterhead face Queen’s Park on Saturday in the Scottish Cup, which will see them face one of their former charges in Grant Savoury.

The ex-Celtic youngster was an impressive performer for Peterhead last season and earned a move to the Spiders in the summer, upon their promotion to the Championship.

“At Peterhead we’ve always tried to give people a platform to have a good career,” said Nicholls. “Grant certainly has a chance in the game.

“The same applies for the boys who are at Peterhead just now, if they buckle down and take on board the advice they are given.

“It’s certainly pleasing from a coaching aspect when you see players like that continue trying to improve.

“Grant’s not playing just now, which just shows you how good a side Queen’s Park have got.”
