An invitation to a wedding is an honour. Follow this handy checklist and get ready to be the perfect wedding guest

One day, you’re simply gathering your post. You sort through the usual bills until you spot an unusual envelope – sometimes big, sometimes small. This letter feels different and special. You open it and your life is forever changed – well, at least for the next few months. You are now officially invited to a wedding. The time to prepare to be the perfect wedding guest starts now.

12 – 6 months before

Be the perfect guest by sending an RSVP if you will or will not be attending. Most wedding invitations clearly stipulate if plus ones or children are allowed. Don’t forget to let them know how many people will be attending.

Next, it’s time to book your overnight accommodation. If you are able, staying overnight at a nearby accommodation allows you to fully enjoy the wedding and let loose on the dance floor without worrying about the long drive home. Some couples will suggest a few options or even ‘block out’ rooms for their guests to book at a preferential rate.

If the couple does list any suggested accommodations, do your own research and don’t forget to book taxis or transfers.

Now that you’ve RSVPd and booked your accommodation, it’s time to start planning the details. Check out the wedding gift registry, choose your outfit, call that babysitter and start looking forward to celebrating in style.

The big day

Finally, it’s time to celebrate the special couple and their love. Don’t forget to have a substantial breakfast the morning of and don’t be late. Upon arrival, be sure to ask about the social media or photography policies during the day. No one likes a spoiler!
