First record bought?

It must have been the first Spice Girls album.

Book that changed your life?

I don’t know that many books have actually changed my life but one that did have a direct effect was Allen Carr’s Easy Way To Stop Smoking. I read that almost 10 years ago and haven’t smoked since.

Most expensive purchase? My house.

First job?

I had a paper round at age 14.

Favourite time of day?

Picking up my son from nursery. You can’t beat seeing his little face light up when he sees me.

Last time you cried?

I cry over songs all the time like If I Needed You by Townes Van Zandt.

Worst fashion faux pas?

Probably back to trying to imitate the Spice Girls in the late ’90s.

Favourite holiday?

My best holiday memories are road-tripping around the States.

Idea of holiday hell? Benidorm.

Biggest fear?

I fear for the future our children will have.

What are you watching on TV?

It’s nearly Christmas so there’s been a lot of Home Alone.

Favourite movie?

I haven’t watched it for years but Forrest Gump has to be up there with the best for me.

How do you relax?

Same way I work, by playing guitar and writing.

Best advice you’ve been given?

Brush and floss your teeth.

Who you last spoke to on the phone?

My mum.

First thing you did this morning?

I said “Good morning” to my little one.

Worst mistake?

Spending so many years playing covers and not pursuing my original material.

Your inspiration?

Some of the greatest writers and artists to me are Tom Petty, Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton.

Who would you most like to meet?

Jim Carrey.

Childhood crush? Johnny Depp in Cry-Baby.

Weirdest fan gift?

The weirdest but also the most useful – guitar batteries.

Quirky habits? Too many to reveal.

Worst meal?

It was when I was on the island of Madeira.

We went to a place that had looked quite upmarket and were served steak with crisps, and little splodges of tomato sauce and mustard were used to try and dress it up.

What makes you laugh? Dry wit.

Most embarrassing moment?

Recently my guitar cut out midsong during a big gig. Luckily my bandmate was there to save the day.

Sean Connery or Daniel Craig?

Sean.

Beauty is?

In the flaws we allow others to see.
