How we have missed sensitive Sharon

- YVIE BURNETT The mezzo-soprano from Methlick and vocal coach to the stars

If you haven’t been watching Celebrity Big Brother or hearing talk of it, where have you been?

The show contacted me to see if I wanted to record a little video in support of Louis Walsh, which would be used in the event of him being nominated. They have them for all the contestants from friends or family and then, once they know who has been nominated, they can use them on the ITV2 Late And Live show.

Of course, I was very happy to send a video of support and to give my thoughts on why people should save him from eviction. Yes, Louis doesn’t have a filter, and maybe sometimes he should, but there is no denying that he is very entertaining – and as a friend to both Gordon and myself, he is incredibly kind and loyal.

Anyway he did end up getting nominated, and they played a support video from… Sinitta!

That did make me laugh. It’s meant to be a video from a celebrity friend, and of course Sinitta is a lot more famous than I am, so my video didn’t make the cut. That’s showbiz!

You never know though, if he stays in, mine might surface if he is up for nomination again.

But of course I might be usurped again if any of the members of Westlife are asked to send a video in!

Didn’t Sharon Osbourne come across as such a wise, sensitive person? She really listens to everyone and cares about what they have to stay. She was only there as a “celebrity lodger” so she didn’t have to stay the full time. She has experienced so much and it has given her such an insight into life.

I have such an affection for Mrs O and such lovely memories of posh lunches out with her in Beverly Hills, drinking cocktails, and being invited for Sunday lunches at her home.

It seems like no one in that Big Brother house has a bad word to say about her, which doesn’t surprise me at all.

I genuinely think this was a moment when the British public really were reminded of what a national treasure she is.

After this I hope she has her own show again. We have missed her.

Big Brother is still such an interesting social experiment. Before going in there you would be sure you wouldn’t fall out with anyone or make it obvious if someone was getting on your nerves. You’d think it would be very easy to say all the right things for three weeks.

However, the reality is that they do become comfortable with the cameras. The cracks appear, people can’t help but form bonds with some people and not others, and it’s so interesting to watch that.

You would have to be pretty thick-skinned to go in there.

Imagine watching it back afterwards and seeing that you got on everyone’s nerves or people you thought you got on with couldn’t stand you.

And social media comments are on a whole other level of abuse. Some people say they don’t care what people think of them, but surely they do. Surely it’s just human nature to want to be liked.

Oh, and something else that really struck me when Louis and Sharon had to put people up for eviction on the first evening.

We are all sometimes a bit judgemental before we have a chance to get to know someone.

They changed their minds about the people they chose once they got to know them. But it is human nature to judge people within a short time, isn’t it?

I’m often wrong when I do that, and Sharon said she is, too. I don’t like people who seem cocky or over-confident when I meet them, but those people are often just insecure and hiding behind that fake confidence.

So you can’t win, really. If you are overly friendly and try too hard, people think you are insincere. If you are quiet and reserved, they think you are standoffish or boring.

It’s much better just to be yourself, but that also takes a lot of courage.

Anyway, they are all very brave to put themselves up there in the firing line – no matter how huge the pay cheque is.

If Louis is out by the time you read this, I suppose I will be a bit relieved.

It’s like taking your child out to an event. When they are good you are so proud of them, but when they misbehave you want to get them out of there as soon as possible!

Have a good week,

Yvie x
