Bridge of Don Thistle lose penalty shootout

-

Bridge of Don Thistle came close to reaching the final of the Quest Engineering Cup at Dundee East Craigie, but lost on penalties after the sides shared four goals.

Early goals from Finlay Johnston and Stewart Rennie gave the Jags a great start and that’s how it stood at the interval. However, Kai Flynn and Lee Lorimer found the net in the second half and the hosts went on to win the shootout 5-3.

Thistle boss Lewis Muirhead said: “It obviously hurts, but I’m really proud of the squad. We go again at Sunnybank tomorrow night.”

In the other semi-final, at Raemoss Park, Buchanhaven Hearts lost 2-0 to Tayside outfit Lochee United.

Sunnybank reached the last four of the North Regional Cup against Maud at Pleasure Park.

The home side went in ahead at the break through Murray Esson, only for Adam Reid to level and the Heathryfold side won 4-3 on spot-kicks.

In the McBookie.com Premier League, Ellon United went third in the table with a 3-1 win at Rothie Rovers. The goals all came in the first half with a Callum Tremaine brace and Lucas Smith counting for United and Kyle Gordon scoring for Rovers.

Ellon boss Marc Reid is hoping to continue positive recent form tomorrow when Hermes visit The Meadows. He said: “We’ve got to be realistic as other teams have numerous games remaining whereas we finish at Newmachar on Saturday.

“That said, we’re looking to finish as strongly as possible.”

At Crombie Park, leaders Culter beat Stonehaven 2-0 with efforts from Neal McTavish and Callum Dunbar, while Hermes, in second, won 2-0 at Newmachar United, Callum Youngson and a Kyle Munro own goal doing the damage.

An Angus Calder goal at New Advocates Park won East End three points against Dyce, Colony Park and Nairn St Ninian drew 0-0 and a Liam Strachan double, Zak Conway and an own goal saw Fraserburgh United win at Stoneywood Parkvale, who responded via Liam Mackintosh and McKenzie Taylor.
