Golden Ellie strikes again at Teen Awards

-

Paralympian Ellie Simmonds struck gold again yesterday when she was named Inspirational Hero of 2012 at the Radio 1 Teen Awards.

There were also awards for diver Tom Daley, One Direction and a trio of inspirational youngsters were named Teen Heroes.

Among them was Jenna Spiers, from Rothesay, who helped set up a retreat for young cancer sufferers and their families.

She was inspired by her twin brother Calum, who later died of a brain tumour, and she continues to raise money for the project – named Calum’s Cabin in his honour.

Simmonds’ award comes after she won two golds, a silver and a bronze in this year’s Paralympic Games.

One Direction scooped a hat-trick picking up Best British Music Act, Best British Single for One Thing and Best British Album for Up All Night.

The boyband performed at the event along with Taylor Swift, LittleMix and Conor Maynard.

The award for Best British Sports Star went to Daley, who was also named Male Hottie of the Year.

Daniel Radcliffe picked up Best British Actor while his former co-star Emma Watson collected Female Hottie of the Year.

Ben Cooper, controller BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 1Xtra, said: “Radio 1’s Teen Awards are all about celebrating the positive contribution that teenagers make to this country.”
