‘Following the media hype’

-

SIR, – With reference to John McKenzie's comments (Letters, October 4) on Staffordshire bull terriers, I can honestly say I haven’t heard such biased and uneducated rubbish in quite a while.

I have owned two of the breed and still have one. They are nothing but loving, caring and protective members of the family.

One of them was actually attacked by a Dalmatian.

Mr McKenzie sounds as if he is just following the hype he hears in the media.

I suggest he educates himself.

As for no one wanting them, that is simply not true. Davy Reid, Upper Thainston, Fettercairn. on the Aberdeen Bay windfarm, we have been engaged in this project for at least nine years. During this time, we set out our concerns fully and asked the developer to examine them in detail.

This resulted in a considerable reduction in the number of turbines and a change in the layout.

This, coupled with our own research and that conducted by the developer, assures us that the threat to seabirds in the important waters of Aberdeen Bay is now small.

Together with other conditions agreed about future monitoring and research, this allowed us to withdraw our objection.

We wish other developers were as keen to adapt schemes to meet the serious concerns of evidence-based objectors. Stuart Housden, director, RSPB Scotland, 2 Lochside View, Edinburgh Park, Edinburgh.
