Caithness teach Academy harsh lesson

-

Caithness were handsome 10-try winners in a 60-14 home success at the expense of Morgan Academy but for many of the north’s clubs it was a day to forget.

Ellon were trounced 76-20 by Orkney at Kirkwall, while Mackie FPs were well beaten at St Andrews University, although team manager Bob Richmond took some comfort from a second-half recovery in which they scored three tries.

“We were outclassed by a very good St Andrews side. We improved to win a bonus point from our four tries, but 53-29 still represents a bad defeat,” he said.

Gordonians were 31-20 losers at Dunfermline where the much fancied Fifers were pushed all the way by the gallant Countesswells side.

At Thurso it was a different matter with Caithness keeping their title aspirations on track, led by hattrick scorer Steve Campbell, and Evan Sutherland who picked up two tries in the 60-14 homewin against Morgan Academy.

“We played some good rugby. I’m pleased with where we are at this early season,” said coach Colin Sangster.

In Caledonia 2 North Highland continue tomake good progress, easily overcoming Moray 67- 0 in Elgin.

“The new look coaching team is doing a great job”

“We are in a good place, especially as all our underage teams are also unbeaten. The new look coaching team is doing a great job, and what’s more are enjoying themselves.

Canal Park is a good place to be,” saidDavie Carson, the new head coach.

Garioch kept in touch on the back of a 30-14 victory at RAF Lossiemouth, while Banff won an entertaining game at Duff House where they overcame Ross Sutherland 27-19.

In Caledonia 3 North the game of the day was at Balgownie where in the meeting of the two student teams AberdeenUniversity were 29-22winners against the Medics.

Peterhead continued to impress, picking up a 25-20 win at Catto Park where Inverness CD were the visitors.
