Stewart has day of mixed emotions in Sheffield

Scot wins relay gold but just misses out in 300m

Mackie Academy's Kelsey Stewart had mixed feelings after finishing a close second behind Blackheath's Cheriece Hylton when representi­ng Scotland in the 300 metres at the UK Schools Games in Sheffield yesterday.

The thrilling contest between the UK's top two ranked athletes in the under-17 age group, ended with Hylton holding on to take the gold medal in 39.33sec with Stewart finishing inches behind in 39.66.

Kelsey said: “I'm a wee bit gutted but at the same time I really shouldn'tcomplain as that's the closest I've been to her this season.

“There had been a couple of false starts and I was scared of being disqualifi­ed, so I was a bit slow to get going.

“Maybe

if

I'd started quicker I could have caught her.

“I was still in third position with about 70m to go but I was able to push on and I was definitely closing on Cheriece at the finish."

Stewart did pick up a gold medal, however, after anchoring Scotland to victory in the 4x300m relay.

She said: “That was really good. I took over in second position but I caught the other girl with 50m to go Iwasable to pull away to win."

Aberdeen AAC's Ewan Calder also enjoyed gold medal success as part of the Scotland 4x400m relay team which took top spot in 3:22.86, finishing well clear of the English Midlands.

Inverness Harrier Jason MacLean, fromNairn, took a big step towards a place in the Glasgow 2014 Commonweal­th Games by finishing inside the T37 ambulant 100m qualifying standard with a time of 13.03.

Jason also finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 8.46m.

Moray's Emma Bowie (Speyside High) was second behind Reading's Rebecca Keating in the hammer. Keating threw 51.23m with Bowie clearing 44.22 while her clubmate Dionne Milne ( Milne's High, Fochabers) was fourth in the discus with 38.81m.

Inverness Har r i e r George Evans (Culloden Academy) was fifth in discus with 47.05m while Orkney's Thora Cant (KirkwallGr­ammar) wassixth in the javelin with 35.48m.

Ullapool's William Godding placed seventh in the triple jump (12.44m) and Moray's Callum Alexander ( Elgin Academy) was eighth in javelin (44.91m).
