Classic Inverness display despite a week off

- BY DAVID SUTHERLAND

Any fears I may have had that a week off could have knocked Caley Thistle out of their stride were proved groundless as they returned from Kilmarnock with all three points.

The post-match fish suppers at Auchterarder must have been especially tasty with the knowledge the men from Inverness would top the Premiership for another week.

This was a classic Caley Thistle away win. It wasn’t a huge surprise when they took the lead, nor was it a surprise when they responded positively when they were pegged back before quickly regaining the lead. That’s what we have come to expect from this team over the last year.

There was a lot to like about both goals. For the first, the Killie defence could only partially clear Josh Meekings’s long throw but others played a part in allowing Richie Foran to score easily.

During that key few seconds all the movement came from the Caley Thistle attackers with Killie looking static at the back.

The origin of the second goal could also be traced to Josh Meekings. His long clearance landed at the feet of Billy McKay whose lob over the goalkeeper was exquisite.

season so far. Barry Nicholson’s goal was lucky and the sacking of Kenny Shiels in June looks as strange now as it did then. Scottish football is missing him and while Allan Johnston may turn out to be an excellent manager, he is finding the outspoken Ulsterman a hard act to follow.

None of that will worry Terry Butcher however. He is finding it easy to select a settled and winning team.”

The goalkeeper may wear number 12 but the outfield players wear two through to 11.

When did you last see that in the top division?
