NORTH LEAGUE Baby might stump Cresswell

- BY ANDY SKINNER

Nairn County captain Andy Cresswell must wait for permission from his partner before finding out if he can play in tomorrow’s crucial North League encounter against Elgin City at the Links.

Cresswell is unsure if he will be able to play this weekend, with girlfriend Esti having recently given birth to the couple’s son, Struan.

After missing last Saturday’s eight-wicket defeat at champions Fochabers, Cresswell is still awaiting the green light.

He said: “Cricket has probably been the last thing on my mind over the last few days. A lot will depend on what mood my partner is in. But I am certainly hoping to be involved.”

Nairn are bottom of the league after five straight defeats but with Elgin just two points ahead, Cresswell sees the match as an ideal opportunity to move off the foot.

He added: “We have a good record against Elgin in the last few seasons. There is no reason why we can’t continue that. We have got a few new players this year, although we lost a couple of players as well.

“We’ve had a bit of bad luck. But we have scored runs in our previous games. In the game against Ross County there were 400 runs in one day, between the two sides. We have got good potential within our squad. It’s just a matter of getting it all to click.”

Nairn finished bottom of the table last season and Cresswell is determined to avoid a repeat of that this year, adding: “Ideally, not finishing bottom is the main aim. But it would just be good to win some more games than we did over the course of last season. We haven’t really set any massive targets, though.”

Leaders Fochabers travel to Strathpeffer to face Ross County after continuing their 100% start with last week’s win against Nairn.

Second-placed Highland play Fort William while Buckie host Northern Counties.
