Gaelic stalwart is Mod chief
A new president has taken the reins of the organising body of the Royal National Mod.
Allan Campbell has taken up the role at An Commun Gaidhealach in time for this year’s Mod in Fort William.
Mr Campbell, originally from Skye andnow living in Inverness, has been involved with the Mod for many years and has served as a director of An Commun for the last eight years.
He also served as convener of theModwhenit was last held in Inverness in 2014.
His predecessor John Macleod has stepped aside from the role after 10 years at the helm and last night he welcomed the appointment of Mr Campbell.
He said: “Allan is a well-known and greatly respected member of the Gaelic community.
“He will bring his vast experience as a broadcaster, and as a Gaelic language campaigner, to the role. Indeed, tomany Gaelic speaking households, Allan is already the face of the Mod through his active role as the presenter ofmany of the Royal National Mod’s biggest events.”
Mr Campbell was appointed at An Commun’s annual general meeting in Lochaber.
He said: “The role of president ofAnComunn Gaidhealach will be both challenging and, hopefully, fulfilling. I do not underestimate the challenges, but I also recognise the opportunities that we are now presented with, through Gaelic medium education and the arts.”
