Gauld leads north charge
Aberdeen AAC’s Nicola Gauld will lead the northeast’s challenge for honours in the Scottish 10mile road running championships held in conjunction with the Tom Scott memorial race at Motherwell on Sunday.
The Scotland international, who won the Nairn 10km last month, has a best time of 60min 34sec set when finishing third in last December ’s Lossiemouth 10- mile Turkey Trot.
Her opponents include Inverness half marathon women’s champion Fionnuala Ross (Shettleston Harriers), who is defending the title she won in 2016.
Ross’ clubmates Emma and Oonagh Dunnett, from Thurso, will also be taking part, while Shetland’s Charlotte Black will be aiming to do well in the over-40 age division.
Scottish North District Cross- Country League winner Kenny Wilson competes in the men’s race with the aim of improving on the seventh place he achieved in 2016.
The Moray Road Runners club member finished third in last month’s Inverness half marathon which was won by Glasgowbased Eritrean athlete Weyney Ghebreselassie (Shettleston Harriers).
Ghebreselassie also plans to compete as does Rio Olympic marathon runner Derek Hawkins ( Kilbarchan AAC), who recorded the fastest long-stage time of the day at last weekend’s Scottish road relay championships.
Stan Mackenzie (Forres Harriers) will be going for a medal in the over-50 age group competition.
