Special supercar powers in

Audi has revealed a limited-edition, rear-wheel-drive version of its R8 supercar at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The R8 V10 RWS – which stands for Rear Wheel Series – is the first rear-wheel drive R8 produced.

It will be available in both coupe and Spyder forms, with only 999 units being made in total. Power comes from the same 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10 used in the top-of-the-range R8.

This means a power output of 533bhp and a torque figure of 398lb/ft, allowing for a 0-60mph time of 3.5 seconds in the coupe, and 3.6 seconds in the Spyder. Both cars have a top speed just shy of 200mph.

With no Quattro allwheel drive system in place, the R8 V10 RWS coupe is 50kg lighter than the standard R8, at 1,590kg.

A revised chassis set-up and control systems allow drivers to perform “controlled drifts” when in the Dynamic driving mode and with the electric stabilisation control system set to Sport.

Styling-wise, the R8 RWS gains an optional red stripe that runs the length of the car, while a new matt black grille and air apertures have been added at the front and rear. The 19-inch cast aluminium wheels are also finished in black.

Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Audi Sport, said: “The R8 V10 RWS is made for purists. A limited-edition special model for customers with an appreciation for essential driving enjoyment, the R8 V10 RWS is an absolutely exclusive offer.

“With its mid-mounted V10 engine and rear-wheel drive, it successfully brings the driving concept of our R8 LMS racing car to the streets.”
