Clark one of 14 Scots to get funding boost

Aberdeen AAC’s Zoey Clark is one of 14 Scots among the 112 athletes named in the British Athletics world class programme (WCP) for 2017-2018.

The WCP is UK Sport’s National Lottery funded initiative to support the delivery of success at the world’s most significan­t sporting events and is aimed at athletes with medal potential at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic­s.

Clark is included following her success in helping Great Britain women claim silver in the 4x400m relay at August’s world championsh­ips in London.

Scottish Universiti­es and Colleges steeplecha­se champion Fearghas Thomson was in sharp form when leading home a field of 325 in the Aberdeen parkrun 5km. The Aberdeen Univesity student sliced 5sec off his previous best time for the beach promenade course when clocking 17min

“Aimed at athletes with medal potential”

1sec to finish 8sec ahead of Metro Aberdeen’s Iain Manson.

Stuart Milne (Metro Aberdeen) pipped Graham McCabe (Kirkintill­och Olympians) by 1sec to take third position in 17:15.

Robert Gordon University student Hannah Cameron, the Scottish students’ 800m title-holder, cut 31sec off her previous best for the beach circuit when leading home the women’s field in 19:00. Sarah Hodgkinson was second in 20:15 with Fiona Wilkinson (Metro Aberdeen) third in 20:39.

Jenni Rees-Jenkins (Jogscotlan­d Kintore), who won the SAMH prize for mental wellbeing at the Scottishat­hletics annual awards earlier in the month, was first woman in 20:52 at the Aberdeen Hazlehead parkrun 5km.

She was followed by Talitha Shepperson in 21:10 and Jill Bonthron (Metro Aberdeen) in 21:38.

Owain Bristow achieved first place in the men’s run for the 14th time when recording 17:03 to finish 51sec ahead of Ron Gauld (Stonehaven Running Club).
