Champion Holstein choice for top prize at Inglis ton event

- BY ERIKA HAY

Chief steward and AgriScot director John Cousar, of Howcommon, Kilmarnock, had to step in to take over the dairy cattle judging at AgriScot yesterday when the nominated judge, Peter Prior, from Essex, hurt his back.

Mr Cousar’s choice for the title of AgriScot Supercow went to the champion Holstein from the Huddlesford and Icow partnership in

Staffordshire. Icow Huddlesford Rosann is a third calver giving 52 litres per day.

Imported from Germany two years ago, she was reserve champion at Dairy Day, champion at Staffordshire County Show and first at Dairy Expo.

The reserve Supercow was the Jersey champion, which had a 1,000-mile round trip to Ingliston from Pembrokeshire.

Nia Llewellin’s unbeaten third calver – Riverside Tequila Hazelnut – was champion at the UK National Jersey Show and is classified EX93, which is the highest possible for her age. It was the Llewellin family’s first visit to Agriscot.

Brian Weatherup, Parkend, Crossgates, picked up the reserve Red and White award with his Highland Show champion, Parkend Director Starlet Red, one of only five Red and Whites in his herd of 170 Holsteins.

The Superheifer was a close call, according to Mr Cousar, but he picked his champion based on a higher, wider udder with better teat placement.

Champion was Eastford Atomium Kiwi Red, a red and white heifer from Eastford Holsteins, which is a small herd of 30 jointly owned by Shiela Yates, East Logan and Caroline Gilmour, Sandyford.

This daughter of Gen-IBeq Atomium Red calved four weeks ago and was yielding 35 litres per day.

The reserve Superheifer was the Holstein, Sterndale As Rae from Bill Nadin and Yasmine Bradbury, Buxton, Derbyshire.

Calved in August, this daughter of MS Atlees SHT Aftershock was giving 36 litres.

She previously stood first and intermediate champion at Dairy Day.
