the notion that reaching the quarter-finals was a good result for him, and felt his opponent benefitted from a lucky day on the baize.

“It was a strange game,” said Maguire.

“It can be cruel at times and that was one match where everything I did went wrong.

“The table was a lot better than last night but jeez that boy’s one lucky boy.

“I don’t think he knows how lucky he really is.

“It’s just one of them games that went completely wrong.

“Semis, quarters, it’s all garbage.

“I’m not playing the game to get to quarters and semi-finals.”

The other Scot competing for the £70,000 prize is the Wizard of Wishaw – John Higgins – who last night recorded an outstanding 5-0 whitewash against Ronnie O’Sullivan in the evening session.

After his defeat, Maguire spoke of his desire to see Higgins win the Stephen Hendry Trophy, if not his friend Ricky Walden.

“I hope John wins for Scotland but I’d like to see my good mate Ricky Walden do well because he’s due a run, he’s had a tough time and it’s good to see him in the quarter-finals,” Maguire added.

World number five Higgins has been in stellar form all week at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena, having beaten Jack Lisowski, Chris Keogan, Gerard Greene and Ashley Hugill, only dropping two frames in the process.

Higgins will face Australian Neil Robertson in the semi-finals today, after the world number twenty overcame China’s Xiao Guodong 5-4 in a thrilling match in the afternoon session. l Watch the Scottish Open live on Eurosport, Eurosport Player and Quest with Andy Goldstein and analysis from Jimmy White and Neal Foulds.
