Stevenson desperate to sign off with medal

Peterhead: Midfielder unsure if he will be at Balmoor next term

- BY DANNY LAW

Peterhead midfielder Jamie Stevenson is desperate to help the Blue Toon clinch promotion in what could be his last season at Balmoor.

The 33-year-old, who joined Peterhead in 2014, lines up against his former side Cowdenbeath today, hoping for maximum points to keep the pressure on League 2 leaders Montrose.

Stevenson is unsure whether he will remain with the Blue Toon next term but, with Jim McInally’s men three points behind the Gable Endies with three games remaining, he hopes to play his part in bringing the title to Balmoor.

He said: “My contract is up at the end of the season. It is the same situation for most of the boys.

“We will just wait and see what happens. It will be up to the manager but hopefully I will still be here next season. I’m going to be 34 in July.

“It is a good bunch of boys and the best part-time club I have been part of.

“Regardless of what is going to happen, it would be nice to get a winner’s medal at the end of the season.

“We have got a really strong core of players this year. It would be criminal if we didn’t go up.”

Montrose know that maximum points from their final three matches will be enough to clinch the title and automatic promotion to League 1.

But Stevenson remains optimistic that they can be caught.

He added: “It has been the same story for the last few weeks.

“It doesn’t matter how we play, we just have to win and hope Montrose slip up.

“If Montrose don’t drop points and we keep winning games then it would build some momentum going into the play-offs.

“Montrose seem to be playing well and scoring goals but they have tough games coming up against Stenhousemuir and Elgin City who are chasing the play-offs.

“We just have to focus on Cowdenbeath, who were unlucky to leave Balmoor with nothing the last time. “We will take nothing for granted. “We have to work as hard as we can and hopefully get the result.”
