Silage is far from the pits
A Dumfries farmer has been crowned cream of the crop in the British Grassland Society’s Scottish silage competition.
Judge David Hamilton, of Neter Prin Farm, Innerleithen, awarded the top title in the contest to Calum McGinley, who manages Ingleston Farm at Irongrey, near Dumfries.
His pit silage had a dry matter content of 40%, an energy value of 12.1MJ, a protein value of 21% and a digestibility value of 75.
The runners-up were the Thomson family of Middleton of Potterton, near Aberdeen, and Peter Eccles of Saughland, Pathhead, Midlothian, in third.
