Deflated Docherty settles for bronze
Byron Boxing Club’s John Docherty finished his Commonwealth Games with a bronze medal following a unanimous defeat by Cameroon’s Wilfried Seyi Ntsengue.
The 2015 Commonwealth youth champion was disappointed with how his Games ended, after targeting the gold. Docherty said: “Bronze feels good but, to be honest, I’m sick. I’ve trained hard for that gold medal and I’m so disappointed not to get it.”
Highland squash duo Greg Lobban and Alan Clyne, in a repeat of the 2016 world doubles final, today face Australians Zac Alexander and David Palmer for a place in tomorrow’s final.
There are further medal hopes for north athletes, with Alness’ Kyle Gordon going in the road race this morning. Aberdeen sprinters Zoey Clark and Kelsey Stewart are in the women’s 4x400m relay squad that contests the gold medal race, while Neil Stirton looks to follow-up his silver medal in the 50m rifle prone when he goes in the 3 positions discipline.
Ruaridh Jackson, who grew up in Aberdeen and plays for Glasgow Warriors, is in the Scotland rugby sevens side for their pool games against Papua New Guinea, Malaysia and South Africa.
Banchory’s Robbie Simpson will be one of the last Team Scotland athletes to compete as he and Callum Hawkins contest the men’s marathon at 11.15pm today.
