Inverness show no mercy after early setback

- BY DAVID SUTHERLAND

Caley Thistle maintained their good run of form on Saturday against a Dumbarton side that looks destined for the play-offs no one wants to be in.

Despite taking the lead early on they were very quickly pegged back by Inverness who then never looked back.

The home team netted not long before the break and this seemed to knock the stuffing out of the Sons. Caley Thistle quickly extended their lead after half-time and the final score was probably a fair reflection on the game.

It’s always good to see your strikers scoring goals and we’ll be hoping that Nathan Austin’s hat-trick will lead to him finding the back of the net some more in the days ahead. The crueller among Caley Thistle fans might say he didn’t do a lot more but that is perhaps a bit unfair.

While I think one of his goals was going in before he got a touch to it, the other two were nicely taken. Iain Vigurs goal was also a fine finish but the pick of the bunch was Aaron Doran’s opener which was clearly heading to the back of the net from the moment it left his boot. It was hit with power and looked to be moving in the air.

Inverness could have scored more but there were times when they didn’t look to be firing on all cylinders. However, they did also play some attractive football. They missed Carl Tremarco, Coll Donaldson and Charlie Trafford on occasions but if you have to serve a suspension this was a good day to do it. I suspect all three will return to the team tomorrow night when these two teams meet again. Results elsewhere didn’t do Caley Thistle’s promotion play-off hopes much good but they need to keep plugging away and see what happens.
