PETERHEAD COWDENBEATH

eterhead midfielder Scott Brown believes the Blue Toon have the momentum to gain promotion even if they are unable to hunt down League 2 leaders Montrose.

There is no change at the top of the table after the Balmoor team’s 1-0 win against basement side Cowdenbeath on Saturday was matched by Montrose, who saw off Berwick.

Three points separate the sides going into the last two matches and Brown is confident Peterhead’s season can end on a high, one way or another.

Brown said: “The run that we are on just now is good and we are thinking that if Montrose slip up, we are there to win the league. But, if not, we will go into the play-offs in a great run of form and we should have the belief to go ahead and get promoted.

“All we can do is keep applying the pressure on Montrose by taking it game by game and keep on winning.

“They have a tough game next week at Stenhousemuir and so do we at Elgin. We will just try to go and win the game.”

Jordon Brown’s header with 10 minutes remaining saw Peterhead chalk up a fourth straight win and condemn Cowdenbeath to the pyramid play-offs.

The goal was no more than the Blue Toon deserved for a dominant display, which would have yielded a comfortable victory but for Cowden keeper David McGurn.

Former St Johnstone midfielder Brown added: “I think it was quite a good performance.

“We did not give away too many chances and we created lots of our own but we remained patient and I am delighted for Jordon. What a great header it was.”

McGurn made a string of saves in the first half to keep the scores level, denying Allan Smith and Jack Leitch in quick succession and then twice thwarting Rory McAllister.

The second period continued in the same fashion and Jason Brown should have done better with a 70th-minute header which cleared the crossbar.

However, his elder brother Jordon, a second-half substitute, made the difference with 10 minutes.

Willie Gibson flighted a cross from the right and Brown found space to bury an eight-yard header beyond McGurn.

It was a well-taken decisive goal, although Blair Malcolm spurned a late chance to dent the Blue Toon’s title charge when he blazed wildly over from 12 yards.
