Scottish breeders’ strong presence at Carlisle show and sale of Simmentals

Scottish breeders were out in force at the national spring show and sale of Simmentals, incorporat­ing the Leading Ladies fixture, at Carlisle.

The pre-sale show was judged by well-known breeder Stewart Stronach, who runs the Islavale herd at Berryleys Farm, Grange, Keith.

After casting his eye over the heifers on show, he awarded the Leading Ladies championsh­ip to a served January 2016born heifer, Midhope Holy Light, from WJ Hollingswo­rth, Midhope Hall Farm, Sheffield.

By Delfur Chas, and out of Midhope Evening Light, she sold for 5,000gn to B and S Grant for their Dellfield herd, which is based near Inverness.

The reserve Leading Ladies champion was awarded to maiden heifer Overhill House Indi, by Cuarheen Drifter, from Richard McCulloch, Over Hill House, Armadale, West Lothian.

She sold for 6,000gn to Jim and Patrician Goldie, Newbie Mains Farm, Annan, Dumfriessh­ire.

The Goldies produced the top-priced female at the sale when maiden heifer Newbiemain­s Izzie sold for 6,200gn to Richard McCulloch.

Meanwhile, the overall champion title in the male section was awarded to September 2016-born Corskie Hadden from the Green family at Corskie Farm, Garmouth, Fochabers.

By the 45,000gn Bel Dhu Capercaill­ie and out of Corskie Edna, he sold for the joint male top price of 3,800gn.

The reserve male champion title was awarded to 19-month-old Chesterman­n Horatio from N and N Gwynne, Garden Cottage, Castlewigg Farm, Whithorn, Dumfries.

A full brother to the 4,000gn Chesterman­n Graduate, he is by Overhill House Data and out of Chesterman­n Ringleader Natalie 2.

He was also sold by auctioneer­s Harrison and Hetheringt­on for 3,800gn.
