Earning share of spoils bodes well for run-in

- BY JOHN MAXWELL

This was another hard-fought and well-deserved point.

The draw with Motherwell puts the Staggies bottom of the table again but there are still plenty of reasons to be positive after that match.

It was the second clean sheet in three matches, for instance, when you have to go back 20 matches to find another time when Ross County have prevented the opposition from scoring.

Having a settled team has helped a lot in that respect with the same team picked for the third match in succession – that hasn’t happened since March 2015, 141 matches previous.

Motherwell might be the most difficult team that County face in the post-split fixtures.

Stephen Robinson was also consistent with his selection that got the Steelmen to their second cup final in a season.

If they can bring the same kind of intensity to the rest of their fixtures then they will take points off the other teams around the bottom of the division.

Motherwell are a very robust team with a tough mentality and a relentless aggression but County matched them.

It bodes well for the remaining matches, such as at Hamilton on Saturday where County lost in the last corresponding fixture due to being bullied in their own box – that shouldn’t be happening again now that we have a much more consistent defensive unit.

Liam Fontaine has shown how good he is with a run of matches, while Harry Souttar was arguably the team’s best player for the second match in a row.

One area of improvement needs to be an increase in shots on target, but if the team keep applying themselves the same way then the wins will come.
