Robinson spot on to keep More’s dream alive

- BY BILL McALLISTER

Newtonmore’s bid to win the MacTavish Cup three years running for the first time in 31 years is still alive after gallant Glen Urquhart were pipped in a penalty shootout.

Youngster Iain Robinson fired home the fifth successive penalty conversion for the cup holders before Lachie Smith, who had played so well, struck Glen’s fifth penalty wide of Kenny Ross’s post.

Newtonmore manager Paul John Mackintosh said: “We’re relieved to be in the semi-final draw, which is the most important thing.

“We’re struggling for players and it showed.

“Glen Urquhart were very competitive but we gave them too much space and time to play.

“Goalkeeper Stuart Mackintosh was excellent and his form lifted their lads and Fraser Heath played the best he’s done against us for a long time.”

Glen Mackintosh and Heath scored firsthalf goals then Heath (107) and Mackintosh again (118) set up a nail-biting finish.

Kingussie manager John Gibson was frustrated as his side went down 3-1 to Kyles Athletic at the Dell, who go within a point of the top of the Premiership.

He said: “Our centre line of James Hutchinson, Fraser Munro and Savio Genini were excellent but we’re still not taking our chances.”

Roddy Macdonald and Colin MacDonald put Kyles two up, Ruaridh Anderson replied with his first of the season but Scott MacDonald hit the late clincher.
