D-Max is on the up

-

Isuzu continues its upwards trajectory in the pick-up market with the D-Max and an efficient new 1.9-litre turbo diesel engine which can haul hefty loads through the wildest terrain you’re likely to come across.

Pulling power is the first thing you notice about this improved D-Max once out on the road.

Though the single engine on offer is smaller than before, the power output (164PS) is almost exactly the same as previously.

That kind of grunt makes low speed urban work easy and muddy inclines straightforward, and is a major reason why this vehicle can tow a braked trailer of up to 3.5-tonnes.

The entry-level ‘Utility’ D-Max, is priced from just under £16,000 ex VAT, while plusher models are in the £24,000 range.

At around 5.3m long, this is certainly a pretty large vehicle, so you won’t be surprised to flip down the drop-down tailgate and find a substantial cargo area on offer.

You’ll find a space 1485mm long, 1530mm wide, easily big enough for a euro pallet which can slide in the 1110mm-wide space between the wheel arches.

The new 1.9-litre engine has a CO2 return of 163g/ km – comparing well with the 192g/km figure of the old 2.5-litre unit.

That means around 35mpg should be possible on the combined fuel economy cycle.

If you thought Isuzu pick-ups were a bit rough and ready, it’s about time you gave the D-Max a try.

Once, this brand was reserved for purely commercial operators. These days though, it’ll also suit private buyers looking for an all-terrain utility vehicle that can play the lifestyle card.
