Island could be sparked to life

It is something most of us take entirely for granted. Like water flowing when we turn the tap, we expect our lights to come on at the flick of a switch, entirely at our convenienc­e.

Fair Isle might be proud of its status as the most remote inhabited island in the United Kingdom.

But it seems remarkable that for its residents, 24-hour power remains a luxury available only at the whim of the prevailing wind.

Extraordin­ary too that is has taken such a lengthy fight to be afforded such a basic amenity.

It is of course good news for the quality of life of those already there – not least bearing in mind the length of the winter nights so far north.

But it might also act as a magnet to others to set up home or business on the tiny island best known for its patterned knitted jumpers.

Now there remains just one piece of the jigsaw to fill in.

So here’s to Canna power soon. getting full-time
