K ART IN G: SHARP BY NAME AND NATURE AS SEVEN-YEAR-OLD ABE RD ON IAN MAKES HISTORY

A seven-year-old from Aberdeen has made karting history after becoming the youngest Bambino karting championsh­ip winner.

Aston Sharp, a primary two pupil at Robert Gordon’s College, won the event sanctioned by MSA, the governing body of British motor sport, at the West of Scotland Kart Club, Larkhall, on Saturday.

All drivers in the bambino class must be older than seven and have competed in more than six time trials over a four-month period.

Sharp was delighted to come out on top against nine other competitor­s, winning the race by 8.8sec.

He said: “I was nervous to be leading from the start but knew if I made no mistakes I had a good chance to win.”
