■ 1924 – The FA Cup final between Newcastle and Aston Villa at Wembley was the first time the game had been an all-ticket affair.

■ 2001 – Scotland defender Colin Hendry was banned for six international matches and fined £4,500 for elbowing San Marino substitute Nicola Albani in the throat during a World Cup qualifier at Hampden Park. It turned out to be his 51st and last cap before retirement.
