Titles are up in air and so are the helicopters

- BY JAMIE DURENT

Helicopters have been chartered by the SPFL to help deliver the League 1 and 2 trophies at the weekend.

The league’s governing body is preparing for every eventuality and appropriate landing spots were finalised between all four grounds yesterday.

Both championships are still undecided, with Ayr and Raith Rovers separated by just a point in League 1 and Peterhead still able to snatch the crown from Montrose in League 2.

Stewart Petrie’s Montrose players need just a point at home to Elgin to seal the title but any slip-up will present an opportunity to Peterhead to nip ahead – should they beat Edinburgh City at Balmoor.

Ayr had been top for the previous six weeks until last weekend before their 2-1 defeat by Alloa Athletic allowed Raith Rovers to reclaim top spot in League 1 as they push for an immediate return to the Championship.

The arrangements hark back to two memorable title weekends of years past.

In 2005, Celtic led Rangers by two points in the Premiership heading to Fir Park, while the Gers needed to win at Hibernian and hope the Bhoys slipped up.

Nacho Novo’s sole effort did the job for Rangers but Chris Sutton’s goal looked to have ensured a Celtic win. However, two late Scott McDonald goals for Motherwell ensured the helicopter carrying the Premiership prize could veer back towards Edinburgh for Alex McLeish’s Light Blues.

A similar situation could have unfolded a year earlier with the old First Division title, with Caley Thistle leapfrogging Clyde on the penultimate weekend to lead by a point on the final day.

They did the business against St Johnstone, winning 3-1 in Inverness to seal promotion to the top flight for the first time.
