THE SHELTER

- His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen.

Aberdeen bus shelters are taking centre stage at The Lemon Tree tonight. See the sights and sounds of the city in a different perspective through the city’s bus shelters.

The Shelter is a multi-disciplinary piece about real life on the streets of Aberdeen which combines live drawing and verbatim theatre. See the gradual accumulation of brush strokes work with the repeated snippets of conversations as multi-award-winning artist Kate Steenhauer works with writer Shane Strachan. During the show’s development they have been sharing some of the quotes and images of real life on Union Street on the twitter account @writeaberdeen with the hashtag #aberdeenoverheard. They have also been inviting the public to share their own with the possibility of it appearing in the final production.

Fine artist Kate and creative writer Shane first met last year while taking part in the National Theatre of Scotland’s One Day to Play initiative, hosted by Aberdeen Performing Arts, where they realised that bus shelters were fruitful for creative material. Since then, they have developed a series of scenes in which Kate draws live on stage while Shane performs a text made up of real overheard conversations.
